JW Modifier: Drug amount discarded/not administered to any patient

April 29, 2016 CMS announced a change effective July 1, 2016 for the JW modifier for discard drug or biological amount not administered to any patient. This change also impacts the documentation a practice must provide.

In the past the contractor MACs (Medicare Administrative Contractor) had the option to require the JW Modifier or not. The new requirement is necessary to “more effectively identify and monitor billing and payment for discarded drugs and biologicals” (CMS Transmittal 3508)
