Five Ideas for Celebrating the Holidays at your Medical Practice

The holidays are right around the corner, and it’s an exciting and busy time for your practice.

While this is the most wonderful time of year, there is a responsibility to your staff and patients to be professional and remember the many different religious beliefs. It is also essential to maintain an atmosphere that is enjoyable as well. While holiday greetings and festivities can brighten the mood of patients and make staff feel appreciated, practices must be careful.

Follow these five suggestions for keeping the office fun and festive while celebrating the holidays at your medical practice.

It is time to celebrate.

If your practice will have a holiday party, it’s crucial to determine what works best for employees. Some questions you should ask include:

  • Should it be an evening out?
  • Should it be a simple potluck?
  • Will families be invited?
  • What is the budget?

All these options need to be considered and discussed in detail. How close employees feel with one another, and their everyday interactions can determine what style of party to have. Whatever type of event you end up with, use this as an opportunity to celebrate your team and thank them for a year of hard work.

Find a charitable activity.

In addition to a party or celebratory meal, practices may want to add a charitable component to the season to capture the spirit of the holidays. Find something in your local community that appeals to both your staff and patients.

Use this time to focus on the true meaning of the season, change the mentality of your practice, and create an even tighter workplace bond.

Focus on some holiday décor.

Holiday decorations are great for celebrating the holidays. They brighten up any workspace and can lift the moods of employees and patients. But keeping décor neutral is the key to making everyone feel welcome.

Be sure to partake in seasonal décor but keep it classy and not overtly religious. While it’s important to have fun and observe the holiday spirit, remember that your office is a place of business. Your patients may need a dose of cheer, but it is imperative to remain professional. If they are sick or treating a traumatic illness, it’s not appropriate for them to be greeted by obnoxiously decked halls.

Thoughts on gift-giving.

The holidays should be a time of celebration, but often they become a time of frustration as visions of gift-giving dance through our heads. When it comes to giving within the office, it can be a virtual obstacle course filled with concerns, doubts, and questions.

While it can be tricky and stressful, the office gift exchange is a great way to get into the holiday spirit. Just be sure to set some boundaries for your staff and follow proper etiquette, and your team can nurture those essential office relationships and keep your workplace merry and bright.

Celebrate diversity.

It’s vital to make sure staff and patients do not feel excluded or are forced to participate in holiday events. Diversity should be celebrated along with the holidays, so everyone feels comfortable.

It is unreasonable to attempt to please everyone during the season. However, it is crucial that your medical office is respectful, and your patients and staff feel comfortable.

Following these guidelines can ensure your staff still has a fun and festive holiday, and your patients feel comfortable and happy. If your medical office is celebrating the holidays thisyear, we would love to hear your ideas on our Facebook page!

  • As a speaker at the first ad hoc meeting of rheumatology practice managers gathered in a single small room at its infancy a decade ago, I’m amazed to see how NORM has blossomed into a high energy organization of depth and professional meetings with parallel break-out symposia between plenary sessions. NORM has truly come of age. This is where the “business” of rheumatology gets learned. The ”guildmanship” for rheumatology practice management is now strong.- Paul H. Caldron, DO, FACP, FACR, MBA, Arizona Arthritis and Rheumatology Associates
  • In a time of demanding changes in the management of medical practices in the US, NORM has been a lifesaver to the community of Rheumatology practices.  NORM has allowed our practice to stay ahead of the many demands of CMS and others payors and has ensured that our practice remains cognizant of new issues that arise in HIPPA compliance, human resources and medical billing to name a few. Sending our Practice Manager to NORM's conferences has been cost-effective and beneficial to our practice because she returns to our office with an abundance of information that otherwise would have taken months to compile. Every Rheumatology practice that wishes to stay on top of emerging issues in practice management should consider sending a member of their staff to NORM's conference.- Michael S. Rosen M.D., Chester County Rheumatology PC
  • Thanks to all those wonderful people in the NORM Network who respond to emails, offering their advice, experience, time, and support ... I haven't even been a member a full year yet and I am amazed at the dedication of everyone who responds to helping via emails and the NORM Organization itself! I have barely had a chance to explore the resources and I have yet to really dive into requests for help still I am silently learning so much and do occasionally offer what I can! Thank you all!- Cheryl Piambino, Kenneth E. Bresky, DO
